He went to the doctor for a sore throat, but what they found is just shocking. Something had been growing inside of him for months.

Well, this is the stuff of nightmares[1] and one of the grossest things I have ever seen. A little Chinese boy got thirsty on the way home from school and drank out of a pond that had leech larvae in it. One grew in his throat to be 2.75 inches long. When it would curl up, it would block his breathing and he would pass out. Doctors found it and removed the creepy crawly. The boy is all better, but that would give me the willies for a lifetime or longer.

From myfoxatlanta.com:

When a Chinese schoolboy lost consciousness after complaining of a sore throat, doctors discovered a startling cause— a 2.75 inch leech had been growing inside him for a month, Central European News (CEN) reported.

According to medics, 11-year-old Xiaobo Chien likely became infected after drinking from a pond on the side of the road on his way home from school in China’s Sichuan Province. Doctors believe the water, which farmers had collected to use for irrigation, contained leech larvae.

“He hadn’t told us about the water-drinking so it never occurred to us that he may have picked up something,” the boy’s mother, Xiang Tung, 33, told CEN. “We gave him medication and kept him in bed but if anything it started getting worse, with him sometimes blacking out.”

A hospital spokesman told CEN that the leech larvae had lodged in the boy’s respiratory tract. As it grew, each time it curled up, it blocked his airway, causing him to lose consciousness.

“Fortunately, it had not caused any infection and we were able to extract it without any complications and the boy is now feeling much better,” the spokesman said.

I did not realize leech larvae could live inside the human body and grow, but I guess it makes sense. When you go swimming they get into all kinds of inconvenient spots. The little vampires are just disgusting. The boy was lucky the doctors finally found out what it was and got it out of him. I’ll bet he’s feeling much better, but the nightmares must be rough. Kids bounce back though and being a little boy, he may think its a cool story. Who knows? I’ll bet his parents are having a long talk with him about drinking from random ponds. Better to be a bit thirsty till you get home instead of drinking leech infested water. Shiver.
