Shooting at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Kills One, Wounds Three [Video]

At approximately 1:20 am this morning[1], there was a shooting at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. A place where I used to live – it’s lovely there. Hard to believe that this occurred there. A young man, named Steven Jones, shot four other students. One was killed, three others were wounded. Jones surrendered to the police. This happened in a parking lot on the university campus I believe. The school is open today. CNN says this is not fraternity related. I can tell you it is a close-knit community and they must be horribly shocked by this. This happens the same day Obama is going to Oregon to grandstand on the dead bodies of murdered Christians in Roseburg. It is yet another sad event, but not a reason for more gun control. That won’t stop incidents like this.

From Allen West:

One week after lone gunman killed nine people[3] on the Umpqua Community College campus in southwestern Oregon, another campus has been rocked by a shooting tragedy.

As CNN[4] reports:

One person died and three others were injured in an overnight shooting at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, university officials said Friday.

The shooter was in custody, and the school was not on lockdown, university spokesman Cindy Brown told CNN.

It happened in a parking lot next to the Mountain View residence hall around 1:20 a.m., she said.

What led up to the violence was not immediately known, and it wasn’t clear if any of the victims or the shooter were university students, according to Brown.

We are now hearing reports that the shooter was an 18-year-old freshman; no other information is yet available.

The injured were being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Delta Chi fraternity said Friday that some of members of its Northern Arizona University chapter were involved in the shooting, but that it did not have details about their conditions. The shooting, the fraternity said, “was not a chapter-related incident.”

Students are rattled, junior Megan Aardahl told CNN. She awoke to text messages from the school alerting students to the shooting, and from her family checking to see if she was OK.

“There’s a huge sense of community here, so everyone’s just trying to like reach out and make sure everyone’s OK, but it’s a little anxious not knowing who’s involved,” she said.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, issued a statement on the shooting Friday morning.

“My thoughts and prayers are with families of the person who was killed and the three others who were wounded in the horrific shooting on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff early this morning,” he said. “I appreciate the efforts of all state and local law enforcement officials, first-responders and school administrators, and continue to pray for the recovery of the injured, as well as all those in the NAU community who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy.”

The shooting comes the same day President Barack Obama is set to visit Roseburg, Oregon, and the families of those slain in the October 1 massacre at Umpqua Community College.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

The victims were shot multiple times, so this kid was trying to take all of them out. No word on why yet and no real details so far. It took more than an hour after the shooting for text notifications warning of danger to go out to the university community. That’s a little late don’t you think? The situation was long over by then. This evidently happened after a fight among these male students – there were two different groups squaring off. Colin Brough[5] has been identified by the school as the student who was killed in the incident, and Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring were named as the individuals who were shot, but are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center. This took place near Mountain View Hall, a dormitory that houses most of the campus’ students involved in Greek organizations. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and students there. They must be shattered over this.
