The government has been shut down for a few days now, and for most Americans, life continues on.: I mean, sure, all of the politicians inside the Beltway are freaking out over the shutdown, but most of the people sent home work inside the Beltway, so they’re seeing the effects – for the most part, the rest of us aren’t.: We aren’t seeing it, we aren’t feeling it.: Life continues on, because most Americans aren’t dependent on the federal government for their continued existence.
But right now, big-government Democrats have a goal: to make you feel it…because millions of Americans across the nation aren’t dependent on the federal government in their everyday lives, so it is in the Democrats’ best interests to do everything they can to make sure that this government shutdown inconveniences you in some way.
Consider this: yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was asked whether he would consider a Republican proposal to fund the National Institute of Health (NIH), because one thing Democrats had been complaining about was the fact that children with cancer were unable to undergo a clinical trial put on by the NIH while the government is shut down.
Specifically, Reid was asked: “If you can help one child with cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?”
Reid’s response: “Why would we want to do that?: I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force Base that are sitting at home.: They have a few problems of their own.”
Because we all know that for government workers, being furloughed with the assurance of receiving back-pay IS JUST AS BAD AS BEING A CHILD WITH CANCER.
Under a government shutdown, the only federal employees who are supposed to be on the job are those deemed essential under federal law.: Employees deemed non-essential are furloughed.: But keeping people away from our national monuments during a shutdown apparently is so essential that employees were kept around to install barriers around the monuments on the National Mall, and security has been deployed.: One representative of Honor Flights, a group that collects donations to send World War II veterans to Washington, DC to visit the WWII memorial, reported that the National Parks Department threatened to arrest 90-year-old WWII veterans in wheelchairs if they went forward with their plan to visit the WWII memorial and went past the barricades, like one Honor Flights group did the first day of the shutdown.
For big government, this isn’t about doing what’s best for America, it’s about doing whatever is most punitive for America – because for big government, justifying its own existence is an essential function, even if that means terrorizing ordinary Americans, children with cancer, and World War II veterans.
Before he uttered his extremely insensitive and insane remark about not wanting to help children with cancer, Harry Reid said this: “What right do they [Congress] have to pick and choose what part of government’s gonna be funded?: It’s obvious what’s going on here.: You talk about reckless and irresponsible…wow.”
The extreme irony of the Senate Majority Leader, sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, showing a complete lack of understanding of Article I, Section 8 of that Constitution – which gives them the right – cannot be understated.: Reid’s statement becomes even more ridiculous when you add in the fact that these politicians are fighting over a continuing resolution – our government has been funded entirely on continuing resolutions ever since the implementation of the 2009 Stimulus Bill, because that allowed the Democrats to keep spending up at those 2009 levels, which would be higher than any reasonable budget.: That is what is truly reckless and irresponsible.
For a lot of Republicans – those who actually care about conservatism – this is about getting rid of one of the worst laws to ever be foisted upon the American People.: For the Democrats, this is about political theater, and making Republicans look bad.: Thanks to this shutdown, many Americans are beginning to wake up to that fact for the first time.
