After six Democrat staffers and consultants spoke up, their party chair was forced to apologize for his behavior, described by one woman as being “so f***ing creepy.”
The women only opened up to media sources on condition of anonymity and they have all claimed that the Florida Democrat Party Chairman, Stephen Bittel, had produced an inappropriate working environment for the women involved with the party, up to inviting the women for rides on his private jet. I’m not sure if he actually has a private jet or if that’s just gross innuendo and frankly, I don’t want to know.
Bittel quit soon after the accusations came to light.
But then, on Sunday, things got better or worse, depending on who’s side you’re on. The Florida Democratic’s Party President Sally Boynton Brown also was forced to resign, after she wrote an apology defending Bittel, saying that she was “heartbroken” that the offended staffers didn’t first speak to her. She also added that she never saw the kind of behavior from Bittel that the other women claimed, saying:
“In my experience, Chairman Bittel has been refreshingly open to feedback, given by myself and others, about his conversational style and modified his approach when he learned that others found it off-putting.”
Boynton Brown, who made some waves last January when she suggested at a DNC forum when she was involved in the Idaho party that they should be training white people to “shut their mouths,” said that what the Dems should really be doing here is simply to add a few new sexual harassment policies.
The women that spoke up said that there was “a lot of boob stuff in his office,” which she had seen in her experience as a fundraiser in the years past and that other women in the office warned her to not go “into his bathroom.” Bittel’s spokesperson confirmed that yes, Bittel did indeed have at least a pair of stress balls shaped like breasts. The boob balls were a gag gift from a “former female general counsel of his company,” given for a birthday in years past and were apparently kept in one of his drawers. Like the private jet, I’m not sure exactly if they mean his drawers, or the desk.
But, Bittle apologized, except not really, saying that he has “much to learn” and he will “do better.”
