President Elect Trump: Burning US Flag Should Result in Loss of Citizenship or Jail for a Year

Liberals have been overwhelmingly, persistently, negative about this country. And they’ve been led by our current president, who takes every chance he gets to denigrate the United States, along with his wife, who famously proclaimed that she had never been proud of her country before until Obama was nominated for president. So, having a president who is proud of his country will be a nice change. But did Donald Trump just take it too far[1]?

Trump recently released a statement on Twitter where he called for people who burn the United States flag to be put in jail, or have their citizenship revoked:

Trump’s supposed patriotism is nice, but this tweet is disturbing in the extreme.

Here’s the problem: burning the flag is offensive to many people. This is a fact. Yet we have this thing in the United States called the “Constitution.” And the Constitution protects certain inalienable rights. Those rights include freedom of religion, freedom to peacefully assemble… freedom of speech.

Burning the flag is freedom of speech. Jailing someone because they burned the flag is a huge violation of freedom of speech and frankly, it goes against everything the flag stands for. What sets this country apart from other countries is that people don’t have to worry about being persecuted because they say something that the government disagrees with. Jailing someone or revoking their citizenship because of a political protest is a grossly offensive, un-American idea. Conservatives are supposed to be the most ardent Constitutional defenders, too, so it’s insane that there are so-called conservatives who would support this kind of thing.

Trump may think he’s being patriotic with this statement. But unfortunately, he’s very much in the wrong here.
