Donald Trump held a rally in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday. Preceded by other speakers, including Ben Carson, Alveda King and Franklin Graham, Trump spent his time on stage slamming the media, threatening a government shutdown if his border wall wasn’t funded and hinting at a presidential pardon for former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He also called out Antifa for their continuing violence.
“You know, they show up in the helmets and the black masks and they’ve got clubs, they’ve got everything,” he said before calling them out by name. Protesters had already begun trying to interrupt his speech — but the number of protesters willing to show up in the scorching desert heat was surprisingly small.
“All week they’re talking about the massive crowds that are going to be outside,” Trump said. “Where are they? Where are they? Well, it’s hot out.”
Those that did show up were met with tear gas and pepper spray from police after the protest quickly turned violent. “People in the crowd began fighting and throwing rocks and bottles at police,” Sgt. Jonathan Howard said in a statement released to CNN. “They also dispersed some gas in the area. Police have responded with pepper balls and oc (pepper) spray in an attempt to disperse the crowd and stop the assaults.”
Eventually, four people were arrested. But first, one protester took a pepper ball right to the groin.
In the now-viral video, a protester wearing a gas mask noticed a tear gas canister near him, so he ran over and kicked it back towards the police. As he walked back, a noticeable cloud of dust exploded from his groin — police had shot him with a pepper ball, causing him to double over in pain. He eventually hit the ground before being helped out of the street.
Hey, you know what they say. Play stupid games? Win stupid prizes.
