THIS IS IT – Trump Set to Sign One of the Most Important Executive Orders Yet

One of the reasons so many Americans voted for Donald Trump was because they believed he would improve our struggling economy and bring jobs back to American workers. In the first months of his presidency, construction jobs have seen a major boom. And his new executive order[1] should also make a big difference for jobs.

Trump visited Wisconsin today, where he signed his newest executive order, fulfilling his “buy American, hire American” campaign promise. The order revises the H1-B visa program and he signed it while visiting Snap-On Tools in Kenosha.

Trump administration officials praised the executive order, saying that government waivers have allowed foreign workers to circumvent laws and take jobs from Americans. “For too long, rather than operating as designed and allowing only the best and brightest to come in and fill key positions, the H-1B non-immigrant visa program has been administered in a way that harms American workers — specifically, it has led to a flood of relatively low-wage, low-skill workers in the tech sector,” one official said. “Our goal is to ensure that U.S. workers who are just as qualified, willing and deserving to work in these fields are not ignored or otherwise unfairly disadvantaged in the H-1B process.”

The first part of the executive order — “Hire American” — forces a review of the H1-B visa program to ensure it serves the “national interest”. The program currently allows approximately 85,000 foreign workers into the country each year. Trump has said that the program is guilty of “importing low-wage workers on H-1B visas to take jobs from young college-trained Americans.” The order will begin the overhaul of the current system, a lottery which determines which companies can sponsor visas. The goal is to continue to attract the most skilled and highest-paid applicants, while also not overlooking American workers.

Initially, Trump promised to abolish the H1-B visa program altogether, but his executive order indicates he’s had a change of heart.

The second part of the order — “Buy American” — gives directives to the same companies to use American-made products and goods when taxpayer dollars are being used for federally-funded projects. “‘Buy American’ is the Trump administration’s highest priority when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars,” an administration official said. It will reduce waivers and exemptions that allow companies to circumvent current “Buy American” initiatives.

Snap-On CEO Nick Pinchuk cheered the executive order. “The capability of the American middle class to make things and keep them running has been at the base of our nation’s strength since its founding,” he said. “We believe the President’s visit emphasizes the need to nurture such manufacturing strength.”
