$20 Million for 14 Green Make-Work Jobs

Excellent news for our progressive rulers: unlike anthropogenic global warming, green jobs have been proven to actually exist. Seattle has created 14 of them, at a cost to taxpayers of a measly $20 million[1]:

Last year, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn announced the city had won a coveted $20 million federal grant to invest in weatherization. The unglamorous work of insulating crawl spaces and attics had emerged as a silver bullet in a bleak economy — able to create jobs and shrink carbon footprint — and the announcement came with great fanfare.

McGinn had joined Vice President Joe Biden in the White House to make it. It came on the eve of Earth Day. It had heady goals: creating 2,000 living-wage jobs in Seattle and retrofitting 2,000 homes in poorer neighborhoods.

But more than a year later, Seattle’s numbers are lackluster. As of last week, only three homes had been retrofitted and just 14 new jobs have emerged from the program. Many of the jobs are administrative, and not the entry-level pathways once dreamed of for low-income workers.

According to liberals, every time someone goes on unemployment[2] or collects food stamps[3], the economy gets a shot in the arm. By the same token, paying bureaucrats to do administrative work of minimal benefit to anyone should boost us right out of the Hope & Change doldrums. If you doubt it, consider that due to the explosive growth of the federal leviathan under Comrade Obama, real estate prices have been steadily rising in DC suburbs[4], even as they collapse everywhere else.

Come back, Van Jones — all is forgiven! If $20 million buys 14 jobs, the $60 billion of our money[5] entrusted to the avowed communist and “rowdy black nationalist” ought to get a whopping 42,000 useless chair-warmers on the public payroll. Of course the drain on the economy would throw another 100,000 out of work (every “green” job destroys 2.2 real jobs[6]), but that in turn would benefit the economy because it would mean more people collecting food stamps. The most powerful Democrat in the House has revealed that for every dollar blown on food stamps, $1.79 goes back into the economy[7].

If the government creates enough green jobs, Obamunism will have us all on food stamps. Think of the free wealth that will magically create.
