It’s no secret that I think Barack Obama has been a colossal failure as a president.
Forty-one straight months of unemployment over eight percent is nothing to cheer about, but Obama seems to think that moving more people out of the job market and into entitlement programs is a positive development.
How else to explain his decision a few weeks ago to cut out the heart of the 1996 welfare reforms: that were passed by Bill Clinton and a Republican Congress?
The Romney campaign is seizing the opportunity, using harsh language from members of Obama’s own party to tell the story in a new ad, just released late last night:
YouTube | The Rise And Fall Of Welfare Reform
As is so often the case, the best weapon against Obama is his own words, and this ad makes effective use of Obama’s own admitted opposition to the original Clinton welfare reforms.
The Romney campaign sent out an email with this ad that included two longer quotes from Obama, pointing out that “[w]hen it comes to welfare reform, President Obama is out of step with the country, his party, and even his own Vice President.”
“You know, let me say one thing about this, because I’ve been very active in drafting the state of Illinois’ welfare proposal and thinking about how do you craft these coalitions. I was not a huge supporter of the federal plan that was signed in 1996.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Washington, DC, 6/8/98)
“The first question which is fairly specific is about welfare reform. As most of you know I think, in 1996 the Republican Congress passed and President Clinton signed a welfare reform bill that essentially ended a 60 year entitlement to welfare. I was a strong proponent of some reform of the welfare system. I would not probably have supported the federal system — the federal bill that was passed.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Northfield, MN, 2/5/99)
