New York Forbids Putting Electronics Out With Trash; Dead TVs Pile Up Along Roads

The key to total rule is to make everyone a criminal. That’s why countries where government has grown beyond any restraint resemble prison camps. Ayn Rand put it well:

There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

One of the many applications of this principle in the dystopia liberals are making of New York has produced dead television sets along the back roads of Staten Island:

Stricter disposal regulations aimed at recycling electronics to help protect the environment have resulted in more residents illegally dumping their e-waste in remote areas, primarily on the South Shore.

Televisions, computers, microwaves and other devices tossed along roadsides are becoming a more common sight.

Since Jan. 1, it’s been illegal for borough residents to toss in the trash or leave at curbside everything from computers and televisions to old fax machines and VCRs.

If this is an example of unintended consequences, bureauweenies are dumber than I thought. What did they think people would do, compost their old appliances? Most are not going to go through the hoops of locating an official disposal site.

These laws are intended not just for the sake of empty environmentalist posturing, but to create lawbreakers who can be lucratively fined. The inevitable byproduct of trash all along the road is something statists are willing to live with.
