Obama’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Tyranny on Wheels

Liberals have several ways of making it difficult for us to drive. They deliberately inflate the price of gasoline, by restricting domestic drilling and preventing oil from being piped from Canada. They make cars more expensive and less safe with absurd fuel efficiency mandates. They even deliberately make it difficult and expensive to find a place to park. This is because mobility is freedom.

When utopia is achieved, no one will go anywhere except by public transportation. That way we will go where the masterminds have decided we should go, when they have decided we should go there.

In the meantime, our overlords are adjusting to private automobiles as best they can:

Before the end of this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] will decide whether or not to begin the rulemaking process to mandate that newly manufactured cars include what is being called “vehicle-to-vehicle” (V2V) communications technology that constantly broadcasts via radio wave the car’s location, direction, speed and, possibly, even the number of passengers it is carrying.

“NHTSA expects to make a decision on V2V technology by the end of the year,” a spokesman for the agency told CNSNews.com.

That point was reaffirmed by NHTSA Administrator David Strickland in testimony in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee [Tuesday], where he said the agency will “decide this year whether to further advance the technology through regulatory action, additional research, or a combination of both.”

Remember when technological research was intended to make our lives better? That was back when R&D was mostly funded by private corporations. Now it is oriented toward the primary objective of the government that coercively funds it: total control.

Tracking our every movement isn’t enough. We must be forced to ride in cars instead of drive them:

NHTSA sees this technology as the first step on a “continuum” of automotive evolution that will ultimately lead to fully automated vehicles navigated by internal electronics linked to external infrastructure, communications and database systems. …

The downside is that such a transportation system would give the government at least the capability to exert increasing control over when, where, if — or for how much additional taxation — people are allowed to go places in individually owned vehicles.

But all that is in the future. For now, Big Government is forced to rely on conventional police state tactics to keep us in line. For example:

Some drivers along a busy Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at a police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood.

It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.

According to the NHTSA, participation is voluntary. Those who have been stopped disagree.

The road ahead leads to a clear destination: absolute tyranny. Time to pull a U turn while we still can.

David Strickland, NHTSA Administrator, nudges us along toward utopia.
