A new website will be unveiled today that will save millions in operating costs and hours upon hours for users.

The new version of WhiteHouse.gov is the result of a months of work that intends to “bring the Trump administration’s digital presence up to current standards.” According to an official, the previous version of the site was a “good temporary measure that allowed us to use what the previous administration had built, but it wasn’t where it needs to be in terms of providing people with content they can easily access.”

And checking it now, I have to say that it looks pretty good. Generally, buttons on a website should be arranged from left to right in order of what people click on most often. In this case, it looks like people are most interested in the economy, then national security. There are two search bars so you only have to spend about one second before finding that feature if that’s what you want. I searched for The Wall and the first results were from the Wall Street Journal and when I filtered by the issue Immigration, the top result was about the victims of illegal aliens and remarks by the President on MS-13.

I’ve worked on a few websites in my time and overall I think it looks beautiful. Nice and clean, and the options are difficult to misjudge.

Oh… and there is no option for Spanish.

Compare it to Obama’s website and try not to fall asleep:

Whoever did the work on the new White House site did a fantastic job. It’s important to update websites not just for ease of use, but for security. A website can track you around the web after you visit, or gain information from your Facebook account, so they can tell the demographics of the people who visit their site. And a poorly designed website can be broken into, like a home with an unlocked deck door.

The bulk of the savings have to do with security costs, a fee that would generally include the computer servers used to house the information running through the website allowing many thousands of people to view it at once, and for paying security experts to monitor that nobody is trying to break in. A website that has fewer faults from the start is much harder to break and costs a lot less, because you’ll only need one or two well qualified staffers to run the show.

According to a White House spokesperson, the old site cost over $6 million per year to run and they are now saving “more than 60% of that number per year.” Melania in the White House has applied the same thought process to her own staffing costs, which are $750,000 less than Michelle’s were[4]. Melania has only 9 staffers for her position as FLOTUS versus Michelle, who in her first year had 24.
