I believe 100% that places of business (aside from emergency services) should be able to reserve the right to refuse service to any person for any reason. That being said, there needs to be some discretion utilized in the application of certain policies like in this case.

When you see the shirt this young boy is wearing, you’re going to spend at least 5 minutes looking at it trying to find something wrong with it.

Are you ready?

The Tavern at Phipps Plaza denied to serve the family of this young boy because he was wearing a sleeveless Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt and according to the restaurant, sleeveless shirts are not allowed.

The Tavern’s manager insisted that the family leave because the dress code applied to “gentlemen of all ages.” The child’s aunt didn’t think there was anything wrong with his outfit, but would have gladly taken him to another establishment if they had thought he was inappropriately dressed.

WXIA-TV Atlanta requested a statement on the incident, but the restaurant didn’t immediately answer. However, they did reach out to the family to apologize for the situation, claiming that the company is taking full responsibility for the incident and apologizing. The spokeswoman[2] stated that the family was removed from the restaurant as the result of a miscommunication and a misunderstanding of the dress code.

“[The] rule does not apply for children and ladies — for gentleman only,” stated company spokeswoman Amber Stewart. “It was an embarrassing misunderstanding on our part. [The manager who asked the family to leave is] a manager in training who had a gross misunderstanding of our policy.”

At this point, the family has accepted the apology of the business.

I’m glad that this story had a happy ending. Mistakes happen and it’s important to discern whether things are done on accident (as in this case) or maliciously. This business deserves to be applauded for how they handled this situation.
