Many countries in Europe have been debating banning burqas and niqabs, and now the debate has made its way to Australia. Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson addressed the Australian parliament on the issue and did something to make sure her point got across: she walked in wearing a burqa.
Hanson has openly expressed her opposition to burqas and has called for the Australian government to ban the Islamic robes, which fully cover a woman’s face. Hanson calls them “oppressive” and made her point by wearing a burqa to a debate on the issue.
Some of the other members of Parliament began laughing when they saw her, while others were clearly outraged. Senate President Stephen Parry was forced to call for order to settle everyone down. “I’m quite happy to remove this, because this is not what should belong in this Parliament,” Hanson said. “In light of our national security of this nation, will you work to ban the burqa in Australia?”

While Hanson has argued that the burqa is oppressive to women, that isn’t her only concern when it comes to burqas. “There have been 13 foiled national threats against us with terrorism, three that have been successful and Australians have lost their lives,” she said. “Terrorism is a true threat to our country. Many Australians are very much in fear of it. A large majority of Australians wish to see the banning of the burqa.”
Hanson later explained that she got the idea to wear a burqa into Parliament after Parry said last year that anyone could wear one into Parliament. She also released a statement further explaining her position, arguing that burqas presented “barriers to assimilation.” She also said that they “disadvantaged women from finding employment, was causing issues inside our justice system, presented a clear security threat and had no place in modern Western society.”
