Hotel Posts Sign Demanding Jewish Guests Shower Before Entering Pool

I never thought[1] I would see such blatant anti-Semitism again in this lifetime, but here it is. At a hotel in Switzerland, management put up a sign telling Jewish guests that they would need to shower before swimming. You can imagine the outrage after that got out. They also said that if Jews broke the rules, they would close the swimming pool to them. There was another sign on the refrigerator in the hotel that specified special hours for Jewish guests. That’s just abhorrent and shameful.

The signs have since been removed and the hotel said it was a misunderstanding. I highly doubt that. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely was outraged by the signs. “Everyone had been very nice to us; suddenly we came down and saw the sign, we were in shock,” one of the Israeli guests told Channel 2. “It was very strange and the sort of anti-Semitic incident we have not been exposed to before,” she said. I bet. Hotovely flatly stated that removing the signs was not near enough. “Unfortunately, anti-Semitism in Europe is still a reality and we must make sure that the punishment for incidents such as these will serve as deterrents for those who still harbor the germ of anti-Semitism,” she said.

From The Times of Israel[3]:

A hotel in Switzerland put up signs telling “Jewish guests” to shower before swimming, sparking outrage from the guests and an official complaint from the Foreign Ministry on Monday.

“To our Jewish guests, women, men and children, please take a shower before you go swimming,” said one sign at the at the Aparthaus Paradies in the Alpine resort village of Arosa . “If you break the rules I’m forced to close the swimming pool for you.”

Another sign, this one on the refrigerator, said: “For our Jewish guests: You may access the refrigerator only in the following hours: 10:00-11:00 and 16:30-17:30. I hope you understand that our team does not like being disturbed all the time.”

While guests said they were horrified by the signs and Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely in a statement expressed her outrage at the situation, the hotel said it was a misunderstanding and there was no anti-Semitic intent at all.

Ruth Thomann, who is the manager of the hotel, insisted that many Jews visit the hotel, particularly at this time of year and they are very welcome. She claimed that other guests had claimed that Orthodox Jews did not shower often enough and then went into the pool. She said she was naive and didn’t think before posting the signs and said they should have applied to everyone. As for the refrigerator, she claimed that Jewish guests were taking up too much room with their Kosher food. This woman is a liar… I don’t believe her in the least. She looks like an anti-Semite to me all the way.

The hotel is said to be very popular with ultra-Orthodox Jewish guests because they are very friendly and accommodate their special religious needs. Here’s the hotel’s official excuse: “The sign on the freezer was hung because only Jews used the workers’ refrigerator,” it said. “The sign regarding the showers was hung after two Jewish girls entered without taking a shower, ignoring a sign addressed to all guests. Therefore, a specific sign was hung to focus their attention on this.” I think if I were Jewish, I’d find another hotel. This is just unacceptable and an extremely prejudiced and ugly act on the hotel’s part.

And this is scary! A reminder of a dark epoch we believed long gone.A family from Israel who recently booked a stay at …
