Washington restaurant jobs are booming everywhere, except for the 700 jobs slashed in Seattle[1].
[2]“One likely cause of the stagnation and decline of Seattle area restaurant jobs this year is the increase in the city’s minimum wage,” the report speculated. “It looks like the Seattle minimum wage hike is getting off to a pretty bad start. Especially considering that restaurant employment in the rest of the state is booming, and nearly 6,000 more restaurant workers are employed today than in January.”
The minimum job hike seems to have killed more jobs than it has created. Employers have to pay workers twice the rates they paid before, and can’t hire as many employees. They’re asking current employees to take on more responsibility instead of hiring more people and providing more jobs for the community. One may argue that the minimum wage hike served a good intention, because people really can’t live on minimum wage, but what good is higher pay if you can’t get a job?
