MSNBC Says “Everyone Has The Right To Free Healthcare, Education, Decent Housing, Quality Food” And….A Tree That Grows Money?

Do liberals even understand what the word “right” means? Judging by the latest promo from Melissa-Harris Perry at MSNBC, the answer to that question is “no.” Here’s what she said,

“Americans will always want some level of inequality because it’s a representation of a meritocracy. People who work hard and sacrifice and save their money and make major contributions: we think that they should earn a little more. And they should have more resources. And that’s fine. But we also however have to have a floor under which nobody falls. And if you’re below that, especially if you’re a child and you’re below that, we are not going to accept that. You do have the right to health care, and to education, and to decent housing and to quality food at all times.”

Melissa Harris Perry[1]

As a compassionate people, we should WANT everyone to have decent health care, education, housing and food. We already take some steps to try to insure that happens. However, there’s a world of difference between WANTING these things for people, trying to make them happen and calling them RIGHTS.

This may seem like a minor distinction, but it’s not. Rand Paul can explain why that’s the case.

“With regard to the idea of whether you have a right to healthcare, you have to realize what that implies. It’s not an abstraction. I’m a physician. That means you have a right to come to my house and conscript me. It means you believe in slavery. It means that you’re going to enslave not only me, but the janitor at my hospital, the person who cleans my office, the assistants who work in my office, the nurses. (There is) an implied use of force. If I’m a physician in your community and you say you have a right to healthcare, you have a right to beat down my door with the police, escort me away and force me to take care of you? That’s ultimately what the right to free healthcare would be.”

If someone has a “right” to quality food at all times, does that mean that we have a “right” to force farmers to provide that food at gunpoint? What about housing? If you can’t afford an apartment, does a landlord have to put a roof over your head anyway at a loss?

Melissa-Harris Perry would probably say, “Yes, that’s perfectly acceptable.” But, it’s not constitutional, it’s not the American way and ultimately, it’s not a sustainable way to run a society. The Soviet Union could tell you all about that if it were still alive and kicking. So, why can’t MSNBC figure it out?
