So Much Of What’s Wrong With American Politics In One Tiny Rally

One insignificant protest[1], but SO MUCH MEANING…

Carrying signs that read “Heal America Tax Wall Street,” nurses union members rallied in front of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio’s downtown Orlando office Thursday to solicit support for a tax on Wall Street that would help fund projects on Main Street.

About 30 protestors wearing red shirts gathered on the sidewalk, carrying signs and chanting, “Human need not corporate greed.” Ultimately, a small delegation gained access to the senator’s office, where they met in the conference room with State Director Todd Reid about their complaints.

TheOrlando protest was one of 61 such rallies held in front of legislators’ offices across the country in a united effort by the National Nurses Union to “make Wall Street pay for the devastation it has caused on Main Street,” said rally organizer Rebekah Patnode.

So, we have a protest calling for higher taxes….on OTHER PEOPLE. Certainly, they don’t want to give more of THEIR income to government to pay for anything. In fact, the only people who seem to call for higher taxes on themselves these days are liberals who’ve already made so much money that they could never spend it all even if they never made another dime. Typical. Everybody wants more government, but they always seem to want someone else to pick up the tab for the spending they’re advocating.

Supposedly, they want to “make Wall Street pay for the devastation it has caused on Main Street,” but the housing crisis that started this whole debacle came into being because the government bent banks over a barrel and forced them to make sketchy loans to bad risks or face the wrath of Congress. “Oh, you made smart decisions with your investor’s money? That’s wonderful, but it sure is a shame that your merger got turned down and you were investigated. Sure, you don’t want to rethink that? Great! I’m glad you finally saw reason!”

It’s also ironic to see union members talking about the economic “devastation” that someone else supposedly caused. Unions are driving cities and states towards bankruptcy, they’ve decimated the auto industry, steel industry, airline industry — it goes on and on. Unions have cost Americans millions of jobs — yet they’re the ones protesting.

On top of all that, despite the fact we already have a 1.5 trillion dollar deficit, a 14.5 trillion dollar debt, and 100 trillion dollars in unfunded Social Security/Medicare liabilities, they want to raise more money so that they can “fund projects.” How about paying for some of the projects we’re already funding?

Again, small rally, but big, big stupid.
