BOOM! Trump Just Issued This MASSIVE THREAT To News Media…

Donald Trump is threatening[1] to literally sue the hell out of the media. This disturbs me a great deal constitutionally. It will squelch free speech. I don’t like the media either and litigation concerning what they say about you is fair game, but I’m wondering if this doesn’t go too far. And if in fact it will have the unforeseen consequence of empowering leftist litigators. Those libel laws can cut both ways and can be used in fact to target enemies of the state… Trump’s enemies. This is messing with the First Amendment right of free speech. Free speech that we find offensive is also protected under our Constitution… not just speech that is favorable to a given political candidate. Trump should tread very carefully here.

One of the things I’m gonna do, and this is only gonna make it tougher for me, and I’ve never said this before, but one of the things I’m gonna do if I win … is I’m gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. We’re gonna open up those libel laws.

So that when the New York Times writes a hit piece which is a total disgrace, or when the Washington Post … writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money, instead of having no chance of winning because they’re totally protected.

Trump’s targeting of the media could have a very chilling effect on our rights as free citizens. Yes, most of the media is vile and dishonest. But we have a First Amendment for a reason. Freedom of the press is the bedrock of a free society. The media are America’s watchdogs in many respects and they should be able to investigate and speak freely about our leaders without fear of repercussions. Otherwise we become Russia. While there should be rules about false press and hurting others maliciously, to muzzle what you consider offensive in the media is a move worthy of a fascist dictator. This could cause the press to fear to write the truth and do investigative work that needs to be done for all of our sakes. Ask Sheryl Attkisson of James Rosen how it feels to be targeted for exposing corruption under the Obama Administration. Trump needs to back off the First Amendment. He needs to restore the Constitution, not use it to his benefit or by shredding it by setting lawyers loose on media exposure he does not consider flattering. Not good.
