Bye-Bye Miss ‘Air America’ Pie

Yes,:  Air America has finally bitten the dust[1]. Another not really shocking story, although they managed to last a lot longer than I ever imagined that they would. Here is their press release[2] (as excerpted by : Hot Air[3]):

It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.

The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America’s business. This past year has seen a “perfect storm” in the media industry generally. National and local advertising revenues have fallen drastically, causing many media companies nationwide to fold or seek bankruptcy protection. From large to small, recent bankruptcies like Citadel Broadcasting and closures like that of the industry’s long-time trade publication Radio and Records have signaled that these are very difficult and rapidly changing times…

When Air America Radio launched in April, 2004 with already-known personalities like Al Franken and then-unknown future stars like Rachel Maddow, it was the only full-time progressive voice in the mainstream broadcast media world. At a critical time in our nation’s history – when dissent on issues such as the Iraq war were often denounced as “un-American” – Air America and its talented team helped millions of Americans remember the importance of compelling discussion about the most pivotal events and decisions of our generation.

Twitter is all abuzz with the news, with some choosing to scold naughty people on the right for being gleeful over job losses. SIGH. The Left has a many-fronted campaign, well financed to boot, to demonize Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Andrew Breitbart and other conservative voices. Their : entire life goal is to bring about the demise of those institutions, thus putting thousands of people out of work (since those institutions actually have audiences and make money). And need we even bring up the unmitigated glee with which they greet any news : of the death of a Conservative : person?: Or an illness?[4]

I don’t feel sorry for the Air America corporate team nor for its personalities. You reap what you sow. I do, however, empathize (the real kind) for the peripheral, behind the scenes, employees. I hope that they find new employment swiftly. Sadly, their employer was working against that too, by working to get Obama elected and then by promoting his job-killing policies and economy-crushing agenda.

Last thing: Al Franken should change his Stuart Smalley schtick to include his buddies from his Air America days to:

“We’re not good enough, we’re not smart enough, and, gosh darnit, people don’t like us.”
