In Defense Of The Daily Caller On The Tyson/Palin Story

by John Hawkins | September 19, 2011 5:19 am

Super-creepy stalker Joe McGinniss has written a book full over-the-top, unsourced smears about Sarah Palin and so naturally, the mainstream media is fascinated with it. One of the allegations in the book is that Sarah Palin once slept with Glenn Rice. Incidentally, this allegation doesn’t seem to have been backed up by Sarah Palin or Glenn Rice[1]. I’m not saying it’s not true, but if I claimed that Michelle Obama once had sex with Larry Bird in an alley behind a Shoneys, my guess is that people would ask for a little hard proof before they bought into it.

As a side note, let me also add that liberal women don’t seem to realize how this hurts them. Most of them even probably think it’s funny to see this story coming out about Palin, but what they don’t realize is that this is helping to expand “rumors about whom prominent women have slept with” into a legitimate news topic. If feminists and groups like NOW were a little bit more self-aware and a little less ideological, they’d be raising holy hell about now.

Now back to the main thrust of the post. Mike Tyson heard about the Palin/Rice story and decided to chip in his two cents in the most offensive way possible. Here’s what he said, via The Daily Caller[2].

Glen Rice is a wonderful man. He’s a wonderful guy. You want her to be with somebody like [Dennis] Rodman getting up … in there. Pushing her guts up in the back of her head! …Glen Rice is a nice, mellow, docile man, non-threatening guy. You want someone like Rodman – yeah baby! Let’s get that donkey in here now. [laughter] Just imagine Palin with a big old black stallion ripping. Yeehaw! [I]n life in general you know … everybody got to get that out of their system when they get out of college. If you’re a black man, every white girl, every uppity middle class … everybody got to get their share of love. She could always get boned out by a black person, a vote to bang her. Other than a vote to run office, the only thing she can do … she’s not a bad person because she likes black people at least in her. Sarah Palin … she met the ‘wombshifter.’

Understandably, people were angry at Mike Tyson for saying these things, but where do you complain? The International rapists’ union?

However, weirdly, the Palinistas seem to have gotten more angry at the Daily Caller for REPORTING what Tyson said than at Tyson for mouthing such obnoxious stupidities. Dan Riehl even went so far off the rails over it that he wrote a post intimating that the reporter who put the story together is a pedophile. That post has since been removed after the Daily Caller threatened to sue[3] him, presumably for libel.

Look, what Tyson said is every bit as grotesque and stupid as you’d expect from a rapist who used to make a living punching people in the face. It makes sense to get mad at him. Personally, I’m adding him to the Gawker category, which means I’ll never personally link anything he does so as not to send him traffic (Gawker got there for its Christine O’Donnell made out with someone at a Halloween party post).

But, why get mad at the Daily Caller for reporting what Tyson said? The comments were made by a famous former heavyweight champion on an ESPN-affiliated radio station; so it’s definitely news. Hell, blogs report grotesque comments like this all day long, every day. What Tyson said will undoubtedly even end up in the 2011 version of the 40 most obnoxious comments of the year[4]. Suddenly though, it’s over the line because the Daily Caller broke the story?

With all due respect, the Daily Caller is not the problem here. The problem is that grotesque, misogynistic comments like the ones Tyson made are treated as okay as long as they’re aimed at conservative women. If Mike Tyson had made the exact same comments about Michelle Obama, people would be bending over backwards to disassociate themselves from him — incidentally, that’s exactly what should happen. But since Tyson made his comments about a prominent conservative woman, he won’t pay any significant price for it at all. That’s a disgusting, reprehensible double standard, but it has nothing to do with the Daily Caller — and the Daily Caller shouldn’t be blamed for doing its job and reporting the news.
