Bowe Bergdahl Versus Audie Murphy

The officer corps must need some more purging, because someone in the Army stood up to Obama. Bowe Bergdahl, for whom Obama traded five top Taliban commanders housed with the rest of the world’s most dangerous terrorists at Club Gitmo, has been charged with desertion:

Army officials said in a statement that Bergdahl has been charged with desertion with intent to shirk important or hazardous duty and misbehavior before the enemy by endangering the safety of a command, unit or place. …

Under the misbehavior-before-the-enemy charge, Bergdahl faces a maximum punishment of confinement for life, a dishonorable discharge, a reduction to private and total forfeiture of pay and allowances since the time of his disappearance, Army officials said. The desertion charge carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison, a dishonorable discharge, a reduction to private and a total forfeiture of pay and allowances.

Desertion has historically been punishable by death, but the Army will not pursue that in Bergdahl’s case.

Too bad, because he richly deserves it. He also likely deserves to be charged with treason for deliberately defecting to the enemy in time of war. But then, treason is no big deal in the Age of Hope & Change.

At last word, Bergdahl was still walking around loose, according to Chief of Public Affairs Paul Boyce:

“Sgt. Robert Bowdrie (“Bowe”) Bergdahl remains assigned to and physically located with U.S. Army North headquarters at Fort Sam Houston. He is not in pretrial confinement or any form of arrest or restriction.”

If honor prevails, Bergdahl will make use of this opportunity to do the right thing and put an end to his own misery. But honor certainly has not prevailed where Bergdahl is concerned in the past.

Speaking of treason and of honor not prevailing, here is what Obama had to say when he illegally released the top terrorists in return for the deserter:

A good day for the Taliban, certainly.

Watch in horror as representatives of the Obama Administration characterize the deserter as having served with “honor and distinction”:

Another Obama official even implied that Bergdahl might have been right to desert.

As many as 14 US soldiers who really did serve with honor and distinction died looking for Bergdahl.

The Obama Administration waged an intimidation campaign against soldiers who might speak out against Bergdahl, possibly lest it become known that he did not just desert, but defected and collaborated with the enemy:

As Obama traded the terrorist commanders for Bergdahl, Andrew Tahmooressi was languishing in a Mexican prison. A simple phone call from Obama would have freed him; but Obama couldn’t be bothered. But then Tahmooressi didn’t win Obama’s heart with statements like this:

“I am sorry for everything here [in Afghanistan]. These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid.”

…and this:

“I am ashamed to be an American. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools. I am sorry for everything. The horror that is America is disgusting.”

Does anyone remember Audie Murphy?

Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II, receiving every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. At the age of 19, Murphy received the Medal of Honor after single-handedly holding off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition.

Then he went on to star in some excellent westerns.

Audie Murphy personified all that was best about the America that defeated the Nazis and the Imperial Japanese. Bowe Bergdahl personifies all that is worst about the America that elected Obama.
