Daily Kos Blogger: Hey, Obamacare’s Doubling My Monthly Premium!

When Obama was trying to sell Obamacare to the American people, he promised it would be all things to all people. It would be easy to use, save people $2500 a year, you could keep your doctor…it went on and on. Unfortunately for all of us, none of it turned out to be true. However, there were apparently a few liberals who were dumb enough to believe it and one of them turned out to be a diarist at the Daily Kos[1].

Obamacare will double my monthly premium (according to Kaiser)

My wife and I just got our updates from Kaiser telling us what our 2014 rates will be. Her monthly has been $168 this year, mine $150. We have a high deductible. We are generally healthy people who don’t go to the doctor often. I barely ever go. The insurance is in case of a major catastrophe.

Well, now, because of Obamacare, my wife’s rate is gong to $302 per month and mine is jumping to $284.

I am canceling insurance for us and I am not paying any f*cking penalty. What the hell kind of reform is this?

Oh, ok, if we qualify, we can get some government assistance. Great. So now I have to jump through another hoop to just chisel some of this off. And we don’t qualify, anyway, so what’s the point?

I never felt too good about how this was passed and what it entailed, but I figured if it saved Americans money, I could go along with it.

I don’t know what to think now. This appears, in my experience, to not be a reform for the people.

What am I missing?

Most liberal policies are oversold just as much as Obamacare was, but in this case the promises were more specific than normal and the lag time was a little shorter. So now, people are actually experiencing the law and finding out that all the promises don’t work. Furthermore, because health care is a big expense anyway, the false promises actually do a lot of damage. Paying an extra $300 a month puts a serious dent in the wallets of most Americans.

However, after reading through the comments, this blogger’s reaction turned out to be unusual. Most people on the website, probably because they haven’t personally felt the bite of the law yet, weren’t very sympathetic. Either they said it was worth it to pay more to cover more people, accused him of being some kind of plant, or they just blamed the eeeevvvviiiillllll insurance companies.

The sad thing about all of this is that it was completely predictable. The fix for it is to get rid of Obamacare and pursue free market approaches like letting people buy insurance across state lines and having medical savings accounts, individual tax credits, and high risk pools. : It can be done, but for it to happen, liberals have to agree Obamacare doesn’t work and most of them would rather destroy the America’s health care system than admit they got it wrong.
