Dylan Noble: The Police Shooting You May Not Have Heard About

Everybody knows about Michael Brown and Alton Sterling. But who ever heard of Dylan Noble?

Cellphone video showing Fresno police officers shooting an unarmed 19-year-old man lying on the ground at a gas station has sparked protests and prompted the FBI to launch an investigation.

The shooting occurred last month. The video was made public this week.

The video shows Dylan Noble lying on the ground on June 25 as two officers with their guns drawn stand feet away from him. As officers yell “Keep your hands up” and other commands, one shot is fired. Seconds later, a third officer approaches the pair, and another shot rings out.

Two shots had been fired before the video starts.

Officers warned him not to reach under his shirt into his waistband, because for all they knew he was pulling out a gun. But in the current anti-cop climate, few would consider that a justification for shooting him three times with a handgun and once with a shotgun over a period of more than 2 minutes. But Dylan was white, so the story has no legs.

The population of the USA is about 319 million. Every day, somewhere in the country, there will be violent confrontations with the police, who are not always blameless. By cherry-picking occurrences that support a preconstructed narrative and hyping them through the stratosphere, the media has been able to create the environment that produced the horrific event in Dallas yesterday.

With different skin, Dylan Noble would have been a household name.
