Two officers have been identified in the shooting of 37 year-old Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a second video emerged yesterday showing the fatal confrontation. The officers have been identified as Officer Blane Salamoni and Officer Howie Lake II. The officers, both 28 year-olds with less than five years with the department, have been placed on paid administrative leave. Abdullah Muflahi, a food mart operator and 28 years-old, was questioned for three hours in a patrol car as a witness to the shooting. He hid the second video on his iPhone in fear of the police seizing it and deleting it. He released it hours later. He says: ‘The truth had to come out. I did hold back from giving it to anybody for the first few hours. I felt they didn’t need to kill him.’ After watching the videos, I absolutely don’t know what to think. It looks very bad. Both officers were wearing body cams, but they fell off during the altercation they claim.
From the Daily Mail:
The shop keeper whose video of a black man being shot dead by police shocked millions has told how he trusted cops so little that he hid the phone it was taken on.
Adbullah Muflahi, 28, secreted away the iPhone on which he had recorded the final seconds of his friend Alton Sterling’s life because he feared the film would never be seen by the public.
He said he was ‘heartbroken’ by the incident, but was worried that the video would be withheld if police had realized the powerful images existed.
Muflahi, a father of three, was questioned as a witness for three hours in a police car after the shooting in the early hours of Tuesday.
Sterling was selling CDs outside the Triple S Food Mart, at the corner of Fairfields Avenue and North Foster Drive, WAFB-TV reports. Salamoni and Lake had responded to a disturbance call in which the caller said someone had been threatening him with a gun, police told the news station. The officers wrestled Sterling to the ground and he was resisting, but I just don’t get why he was shot. I feel like I’m missing something here. Baton Rouge Police have released few details about the shooting, including whether Sterling was armed. But a witness told The Advocate that Sterling did have a gun, but was not holding it or reaching for his pockets during the incident. An officer is heard saying: ‘He’s got a gun!’ & ‘you f*cking move, I swear to God!’ before shots are fired. There’s no way to know if the guy reached for a gun in his pocket and this was the result. The gun was later found in his pocket. It looks bad and ended tragically.
