“Have you considered running for office?” — David Stone
The short answer: No.
The longer answer: As a general rule, bloggers, columnists, and talk radio hosts shouldn’t run for office. We’ve all said too many things that can be used against us in political campaigns.
Setting that aside, even if I were guaranteed to win, I don’t think I’d enjoy being in Congress. Everybody knows the perks and there’s a lot to be said for those perks, but there are a lot of negatives to the job, too.
You can’t be truly honest if you’re a politician. You spend a lot of time calling people and begging for money. You spend day after day after day in dull meetings. You have to be nice to the left-wing jackasses in the press. You regularly need legal opinions on your behavior. You end up having to suffer pompous fools gladly because you’re surrounded by them all day long in your job.
Sure, there’s something to be said for the money, the power, the fame, and the opportunity to try to make a difference from inside of Congress, but there’s a lot to be said for enjoying what you do, too.
