What is one to do when they are rejected by their medical school of choice? For Indian-American Vijay Chokal-Ingam, he used the opportunity for a little social experiment: he reapplied as a black man and was accepted.

affirmative action[1]

Meet Vijay Chokal-Ingam, a proud Indian-American and the brother of “The Office” actress, Mindy Kaling.

Ingam was determined to become a physician, but feared he wouldn’t get in with his 3.1 college GPA. He was right. Ingam was rejected. So what’s the next logical step? Apparently, it’s to apply as a black man!

Ingam ended up applying to the St. Louis University of Medicine in 1998, AND HE WAS ACCEPTED! Ingam states:

“So, I shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man. My change in appearance was so startling that my own fraternity brother didn’t recognize me at first. I even joined the Organization of Black Students and started using my embarrassing middle name that I had hidden from all of my friends since I was a 9 years old.”

According to ingam’s website,, he could’ve declined the slot in medical school. But instead, he turned it into a very unique social experiment. He took on the name of “Jojo,” and began living the life of a black medical student.

Despite Ingam dropping out a few years later, he says he’s not sorry. To the contrary, he’s quite proud of stealing the slot from another black student with a worse GPA than him.

… Ingam now dedicates his life to fighting racism. He contests that affirmative action discriminates against every race except for African-Americans.

Affirmative action isn’t just harmful to better qualified students who should be accepted based on their grades and qualifications; it’s harmful to the minority students who are in no way ready for the rigors of the school they are accepted to based on pity. When are we going to let this miserable system die?
