BREAKING: GOP Candidate Drops Out of Presidential Race

I’m actually surprised by this[1], but I guess I shouldn’t be. Huckabee was never my candidate and I don’t care for how he has treated Ted Cruz. Having said that, I think he is a good guy and I don’t think he was treated very fairly in this race. Mike Huckabee officially suspended his campaign after getting only 2% of the vote in Iowa last night. Ted Cruz won the caucus with 28% of the vote, Trump got 24% and Rubio got 23%. Carson finished a distant fourth. Huckabee won the Iowa Caucus in 2008, but did not go on to be the nominee. Instead we went with McCain, who was an unmitigated disaster. Cruz broke the record last night for Iowa votes. I am thrilled over that, but kind of sad to see the Huckster go.

Huckabee[2]

From The Week:

After getting about 2 percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses, a state he won in 2008, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) announced via Twitter that he is “officially suspending his campaign,” the standard language for dropping out of the race:

Huckabee1[3]

Huckabee, a social conservative, never saw his campaign catch fire this campaign season. In the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls[4], Huckabee had the support of 2.2 percent of the Republican electorate.

You have to have money and support to run this kind of race and Huckabee had neither. It was smart to bow out now and throw his support behind another candidate. I imagine he’ll go with Trump. We’ll see. Next up is the New Hampshire Caucus. RealClearPolitics[5] has Donald Trump at 33.2% in New Hampshire and Cruz at second with a distant 11.5%, tied with Kasich, of all people. However, to be fair… they were off on Iowa. There is no doubt that New Hampshire will be a major fight for Cruz and that Trump has a substantive lead there. Huckabee was only at .7%. He is a social conservative and just never caught fire in this race. On the Dem’s side, O’Malley dropped out as well. Huckabee is a solid Christian conservative. All my best to him.
