This NFL Star Has A Big Surprise For His 4th Grade Teacher’s Retirement Party

What a wonderful[1] and thoughtful thing to do. J.J. Watt is a famous NFL player, but he hasn’t forgotten those who helped him growing up. I’m sure all of us remember certain teachers who were there for us. Mine was a history teacher that was a football coach and there were others. Watt heard that his fourth-grade teacher was retiring after 41 years of teaching and he decided to do something special for her.

He threw her a retirement party with a cake, new shoes and a trip to Houston. She was thrilled to see her old student. I’m sure he’s more than that to this woman. There was laughter, hugs and tears. It was one of those moments that just chokes you up. Watt remembered this teacher and how she helped him be the star that he is today and he had a terrific way of saying thank you after all these years.

From the Bleacher Report:

J.J. Watt is one of the top players in the NFL[3], but he hasn’t forgotten his roots.

The Houston Texans defensive end recently shared a heartwarming story on social media about how he showed his appreciation for someone who helped him on his path to stardom: his fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Keefe.

Mrs. Keefe is calling it a career after 41 years, so Watt returned to the classroom and got her a cake, shoes and a trip to Houston. Because everybody has that teacher they will always remember.

Watt posted about the event on his Instagram page. She believed in Watt when he was just a little boy and he never ever forgot that. Good teachers are hard to find, but when you do find one, they change the lives of those they teach. They make history themselves and receive little credit and very little pay for shaping the destinies of children.

There are a number of people if I knew where they were anymore that I would sincerely thank. Some in grade school and high school… a couple of very memorable ones in college. They probably don’t realize how they impacted my future and my life. I would love to thank all of them because they are the true unsung heroes out there. Watt got the chance to thank one of his and that is fantastic.

My 4th grade teacher Mrs. Keefe is retiring after 41 years of teaching. She was one of the first people to believe in my dream of playing for the Badgers and eventually the NFL and she has taught, inspired and motivated many others. She is incredible and I couldn't be more thankful to still have her in my life. We surprised her with a cake, some shoes and a trip to Houston for her and her husband for the Charity Classic. The full video is on my Facebook page. Thank you Mrs. Keefe for everything that you have done, not only for myself, but for all of your students over the last 41 years. You truly are one of a kind.[4]
