BREAKING: San Bernardino Terrorists Were Planning a Much Bigger Assault

After Farook and his bride[1] executed 14 people in San Bernardino, California last week, they fled in a black SUV. There were four crucial hours that elapsed before they were confronted by the FBI and then died in a shootout with them. Colleagues of mine were listening to the whole affair via radio as it occurred. We knew at the time that the shooters had stopped on a bridge and were dumping stuff into a lake. A week later this makes the news. The FBI is now dredging a lake in downtown San Bernardino for items dumped in it by the killers right after the attack. One of those items is a hard drive that has damning evidence on it on a much bigger assault that was planned. No word yet whether they have found it or not. If they do, it may be so damaged, it can’t reveal anything. We’ll see.

From the Los Angeles Times:

An examination of digital equipment recovered from the home of the couple who killed 14 people in San Bernardino last week has led FBI investigators to believe the shooters were planning an even larger assault, according to federal government sources.

Investigators on Thursday continued to search for digital footprints left by Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, scouring a downtown San Bernardino lake for electronic items, including a hard drive that the couple was hoping to destroy, sources told The Times.

FBI agents will probably spend days searching Seccombe Lake and canvassing the neighborhood for clues after receiving a tip that the couple may have visited the area on the day of the attack, according to David Bowdich, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office.

There were other items that went into the water as well, but I have no idea what they were. It may take days for the FBI to fully comb the lake and the surrounding area. According to federal sources connected with this case, Farook and Malik were in the final stages of implementing a plan to assault a location that had a lot more people in it than the Inland Regional Center where they killed 14 and wounded 21. It may have been a school or university. Farook had multiple pictures on his phone of a high school there. Investigators have deduced this from evidence collected from digital devices and computers the couple left behind. They evidently didn’t destroy everything sufficiently to hide their footprints from the authorities after all.
