Another Iranian Revolution?

After what appears to have been another rigged election in Iran, the Iranian people are rioting in the streets. That makes for a hell of a comparison to the human garbage that rioted in the steets of LA after the Lakers won[1], doesn’t it? Iranian kids are in the streets fighting for freedom, while punks in LA are rioting because their basketball team won. Pathetic.

But, back to Iran. We’ve had people saying for years that we can’t afford to do anything about Iran because the people may rise up and overthrow the regime. Well, this is going to be a great test case for that theory. If it doesn’t happen now, I think the assumption has to be that it isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

That begs a question: has the CIA done anything to help this along? Have they provided the Iranian people with ways to communicate, weapons, and training? Many of us have been suggesting that for years, but of course, that’s not something the CIA is going to advertise. Unless the New York Times leaks it to the world, we may never know, but at the moment, there’s no evidence that we’ve done anything to help them along. If that turns out to be the case, then it’s a damning indictment of the effectiveness and planning of the whole organization.

Additionally, our “courageous” President is doing what he normally does in situations like this: hunkering down, trying to see which way the wind is blowing, and hoping to find an angle that he can use to jump in at the last minute and get credit. Here’s a man who talks incessantly about dialogue and reaching out, but when the people of Iran would be heartened by any words of support from the leader of the free world, he’s silent. If Barack Obama were a real leader, if he had any courage, if he cared about freedom, he would be speaking out on behalf of the people rioting in the streets for freedom — not staying mute on the sidelines, while a nuclear-bomb-making hostile theocracy is teetering on the brink. This is a moment for leadership, but unfortunately Barack Obama is just another empty suit, not a real leader of men.

Ultimately, we don’t know how this is going to turn out. Much of it may depend on whether the mullahs decide to go down the path of the Chinese at Tiananmen Square or Gorbachev during the downfall of the Soviet Union. Both regimes were evil. Both were tyrannical. But the Chinese sent in the tanks while the Soviets didn’t.

Is the Iranian regime willing to slaughter its own people to survive? If they give the order, will it be obeyed? Will the mullahs and Revolutionary Guard fracture over this? It’s too early to tell, but given that Iran is a terrorist regime, pursuing nuclear weapons, and is one of the world’s primary bad actors, a regime change almost has to be for the better, even if it doesn’t lead to a real democracy.
