Basking in Obama’s Presence

Reading a Canadian Press article this morning that a friend had forwarded to me, I was struck yet again at how fawning the media have been toward this President, certain that because of his presences, his coolness, his rhetorical gifts and the singular nature of his election (the first black man elected president in a nation with a history of mistreatment of blacks) his must needs be a historic, transformational Administration.

Despite the “adoring press[1],” Obama has received, he hasn’t yet effected any great transformation for the better. His highly touted foreign speeches haven’t lead to any tangible results, save to alienate our allies:

While the press is still chewing over Obama’s Cairo speech, this celebrity style coverage ignores the fact that Obama’s endless world tour is not actually accomplishing anything. Instead his combination of ego driven photo op appearances and clueless treatment of foreign dignitaries have alienated many of America’s traditional allies. Those who aren’t being quietly angry at Obama, like Brown, Merkel or Netanyahu, instead think of him as as absurdly lightweight, as Sarkozy, King Abdullah or Putin do.

As the President puts on his show, striving to imitate his illustrious predecessors, some, mainly in the media, do fall for his act, with the Washington Post Style columnist Tom Shales rhapsodizing that “the most justifiable criticism that could likely be made: ‘Barack Obama still seems too good to be true.’[2]”

So eager to be in Obama’s presence are some of Shales’s media colleagues that they’ll neglect their duties (to cover the Administration) to attend an off-the-record Barbecue at the White House[3]. Can you imagine the media reaction had Obama’s predecessor attempted to organize such a shindig?

The eagerness of the media and other left-wing hangers-on to bask in Obama’s presence, reminds me of the brainy kid in high school eager to befriend the high school jock. He gains little by the association, save to be in the circle of the popular kid. Maybe he hopes the mere association will reflect some of the BMOC[4]‘s glory onto him.
