Diversity, Multiculturalism, And Western Culture: Walter Williams, lays into some of the typical tripe that is practically passed off as doctrine at many colleges in the United States today…
“For the multiculturist-diversity crowd, culture, ideas, customs, arts and skills are a matter of racial membership where one has no more control over his culture than his race. That’s a racist idea, but it’s politically correct racism. It says that one’s convictions, character and values are not determined by personal judgment and choices but genetically determined. In other words, as yesteryear’s racists held: Race determines identity.”
Here’s another example to get across what Williams is saying. Let’s say you take 10 Asian men, put them on a committee, and ask them to come up with ideas for a fund raiser. Then someone suggests replacing one of the Asian men with a Hispanic woman in order to create more “diversity.” By making that change, did you the committee better or worse? The honest answer is that there’s no way to know that based on nothing more than race. That’s because race doesn’t determine your, ” culture, ideas, customs, arts and skills” nor should it. In fact, diversity based on race is worse than useless, it’s actually harmful. That’s because there are underlying stereotypes about how it works that are racist in and of themselves.
Williams then goes on to talk about another pillar of liberalism on campuses across the country — multiculturalism…
“The multiculturists are right in saying that in a just society, people of all races and cultures should be equal in the eyes of the law. But their argument borders on idiocy when they argue that one culture cannot be judged superior to another and to do so is Eurocentrism. For them, different cultural values are morally equivalent. That’s unbridled nonsense.
….Western values are superior to all others. Why? The indispensable achievement of the West was the concept of individual rights. It’s the idea that individuals have certain inalienable rights and individuals do not exist to serve government but governments exist to protect these inalienable rights. It took until the 17th century for that idea to arrive on the scene and mostly through the works of English philosophers such as John Locke and David Hume.”
American culture is not going to be improved by merging it with Palestinian culture, Pakistani culture, Mexican culture, Cuban culture, etc. It’s just ridiculous on the face of it, like claiming that the Pee-Wee league champions of Green Bay could play the Packers to a standstill. That’s why it’s so important that America be a “melting pot” and not a “salad bowl.” We don’t need to learn from the cultures of people coming to the US, to the contrary, they need to absorb American culture. Some people will call that arrogant — I call it obvious. I also agree with Williams’ conclusion,
“Multiculturalism and diversity are a cancer on our society, and, ironically, with our tax dollars and charitable donations, we’re feeding it.”
