Fashion Designer Who Rejected Melania Trump Gets An Ear-Full From Her Peers!

A few weeks ago, designer Sophie Theallet, who worked with Michelle Obama a number of times, exercised her right to free speech and vowed never to do business with Melania Trump. Theallet said that because she disagreed politically with Melania’s husband, President-Elect Donald J. Trump, she could not “dress” his wife. As far as career moves go, that one was ill-advised. Of course, almost any American designer would be thrilled to dress Melania. She is stunningly beautiful, a former model herself and the soon-to-be First Lady of the United States, virtually guaranteeing mass exposure of the designs to the entire world.

But foolishly, Theallet has aligned her business with her politics and talked herself right out of any further White House opportunities. Some of her fellow designers have responded to Theallet.

Tommy Hilfiger, pictured below, has said “I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”

And, a designer boutique owner, Angela Guitard, located in Rye, NY, won’t carry Theallet’s designs any more because of what she sees as an un-American attitude on Theallet’s part.

She sent an email to Theallet and said, “As an independent store owner unbiased to all, I keep my opinions to myself about politics, especially when it is unwarranted. I am disappointed by your e-mail and the ignorant said (sic) content of it. Clearly you are now inflicting your impudent political opinions on others and using social media for promotion. It is disrespectful and unprofessional on many fronts. The fact that you have rejected our new president and first lady is not only a slap in the face to me as a U.S. citizen, but you have also insulted the true democracy of this country and negated any openness to unite Americans.”

Looks as if the law of unintended consequences has caught up with Theallet, who is now known as a political designer, only available to some Americans, but not all. Doesn’t sound very tolerant. It’s her prerogative as a businessperson to walk away from business. But the crazy thing is this; probably no one ever asked her to design for Melania.
