One thing conservatives have been telling people over and over again is that if you legalize gay marriage, you’re not just legalizing gay marriage; you’re legalizing a host of other weird marriage practices as well.
Across the world, men marry multiple women and people marry their relatives, their pets, the dead, and even trees. If we have gay marriage — eventually all those bizarre practices will happen here as well.
If you want to see the slippery slope in the real world, just look to Canada,
British Columbia — Canada’s decision to legalize gay marriage has paved the way for polygamy to be legal as well, a defense lawyer said Wednesday as the two leaders of rival polygamous communities made their first court appearance.
The case is the first to test Canada’s polygamy laws.
Winston Blackmore, 52, and James Oler, 44, are each accused of being married to more than one woman at a time. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, British Columbia Attorney General Wally Oppal said.
But Blackmore’s lawyer, Blair Suffredine, said during a telephone interview that marriage standards in Canada have changed.
“If (homosexuals) can marry, what is the reason that public policy says one person can’t marry more than one person?” said Suffredine, a former provincial lawmaker. Canada’s Parliament extended full marriage rights to same-sex couples in 2005.
What Blackmore’s lawyer is saying actually makes perfect sense. If the standard for marriage is going to be, “Somebody wants to do it, so why should we stand in their way” to accommodate gay Americans, then you logically open the door to just about anything and everything else.
Once you get to that point, you have to try to stop the other bizarro world combinations with technicalities or by saying, “Gee, that’s disgusting and immoral,” which doesn’t hold much water given that it’s being treated as an invalid excuse to prevent gay marriage.
PS: As I’ve noted many times before, you can actually make a much better case for legalizing polygamy than you can for gay marriage. Polygamy has been around much longer, has been spread across a much larger slice of the world, is actually in practice across more of the world than gay marriage, and produces children. All these oddball marriage practices, including polygamy, should be illegal and our society will pay a heavy price if we don’t make a stand on this issue.
