Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had a “very candid discussion” with the President-elect when they met at Trump Tower in Manhattan. After a lengthy 90-minute meeting with Trump, Abe told reporters, “[I am] convinced that Mr. Trump is a leader in whom I can have confidence.”

The prime minister further claimed that the U.S. and Japan will continue to “maintain a relationship of trust.”

Even with Trump’s campaign trail promises and remarks like naming Japan as a trade rival, condemning the Japanese for not paying their share for U.S. defense and making promises to tear up the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a trade deal supported by Abe and his administration. All of these comments made had Japanese officials on edge.

As the meeting between Abe and Trump was considered off the record, the Japanese Prime Minister refused to disclose whether these issues were some that were on the table to discuss.

Abe did, however, comment that the discussion between the two leaders was in a “warm atmosphere” and that he would like to meet with Trump further down the road in order to have “wider and deeper talks.”

The Prime Minister’s goals for the visit to Trump Tower was to “build trust.”

“I am very honored to see the President elect ahead of other world leaders, the Japan-US alliance is the axis of Japan’s diplomacy and security. The alliance becomes alive only when there is trust between us. I would like to build such a trust with Mr. Trump.”

His comments on the meeting suggest that the two have come to a common understanding and have forged a new path that would lead to common ground. We can only wait and see.
