‘To be white is to be racist.’: That was what one Oklahoma student recorded her teacher ‘teaching’ in one of her high school classes.

The unnamed student from Norman North High School used her cell phone to record the lesson and she said that what was being taught was straight out racism: ‘[The lesson] was encouraging people to kind of pick on people for being white’.

The lesson began with the showing of a video called ‘Mistreatment of Native Americans’. In the film, a man is seen painting over a country on a globe in none other than, you guessed it – ‘white’ paint and then he wrote the name ‘Dylan’ over the space. The student said, ‘He was basically comparing what he had done to the globe to what we did to America’.

When her teacher shared some of his own theories on racism in the world, the student said she was astounded.

‘To be white is to be racist, period. Am I racist? I say yeah. I don’t want to be. It’s not like I chose to be racist. But do I do things because of the way I was raised?’ All this was a way, in the teacher’s own words, to teach ‘how to heal the racial divide’.

The student said she was immediately offended and felt the teacher was stigmatizing her and every other white person in the class as a racist…which is actually what he himself claimed! Openly!

The student went on:

‘Half of my family is Hispanic so I just felt like, you know, him calling me a racist just because I’m white… I mean, where’s your proof in that? I felt like he was encouraging people to kind of pick on people for being white.’

The student said she thinks that the teacher should be made to apologize for what he taught. As of yet, the unnamed teacher has refused to comment on the incident. However the Norman Public Schools released a sorry excuse for a statement regarding the racist lesson, saying that he was trying to mimic another lesson he learned during a philosophy lecture. As if that makes it acceptable.
