It’s not often that a terrorist attack is caught on video from start to finish, but someone managed to record an entire car bomb explosion on their cell phone that took place in Iraq. The eeriest part is the massive shockwave prior to the main explosion, which fans out probably hundreds of feet into the air.
The Daily Mail reports,
It said that the bomb went off in the north of Samarra, which lies about 80 miles to the north-west of Baghdad.
It’s not clear if there were any deaths or injuries from the explosion.
The footage emerged as Isis claimed responsibility for a suicide blast and a roadside bombing on Friday that targeted Shiites in Baghdad, killing a total of 26 people and wounding dozens.
The attacks came as Iraqi Kurdish militias, backed by U.S. airstrikes, seized the town of Sinjar from Isis in a major blow to the extremists. Following its blitz last year, Isis – which splintered off from Iraq’s al-Qaida branch – now holds about a third of Iraq and neighbouring Syria in its self-declared caliphate.
In a statement distributed on pro-Isis Twitter accounts, the Sunni militant group said the aim of Friday’s attacks was “revenge for our monotheist brothers in al-Fallujah, al-Anbar, and Salahaldin,” referring to ongoing Iraqi military operations to retrieve land lost to the IS in those locations.
Kudos to the brave Iraqis who are pushing back against ISIS. It is unfathomable why they would murder others of the same faith in the name of their faith.
