If the pharmaceutical companies have been paying protesters to come out against Obamacare, as the President and his Democratic buddies sorely want us to believe, then they’re doing something very wrong.
The drug industry has authorized its lobbyists to spend as much as $150 million on television commercials supporting President Obama’s health care overhaul, beginning over the August Congressional recess, people briefed on the plans said Saturday.
Well, it could be that they’re doing something right and all those paid operatives in their Brooks Brothers suits and shiny spats haven’t been asking for near enough money. It’s not like we folks on the right have very much experience with this whole AstroTurfing thing. What do we look like to you, a bunch of David Axelrods?
Pharmaceutical companies certainly could seed a bunch of opposition groups with money, but why in the world would they? The truth is that its in the best business interests of Big Pharma for Obamacare to pass. Government-set prices, new regulations that crowd out smaller competitors, and big fat subsidies all work to their advantage. They get more bang for their bucks from members of Congress who can return the favor tenfold (or more) and they don’t have to worry about the pesky pressures from often mercurial consumers like you and me. And they don’t mind being the bad guys in this story, since they’re going to reap a bountiful harvest of greenbacks in the end.
