Of all the verses in the Bible that could have been recovered and preserved in the aftermath of 9/11, what are the odds they would be something meaningful, not just something random like genealogy or an inapplicable story? Turns out a firefighter found a page from the Bible fused to some steel in 2002 while going through the rubbage, and the meaning is profound.
Young Conservatives has the story, originally from The New York Times,
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
So many chapters. So many verses. But these were the words — from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, in the Gospel of Matthew — found permanently exposed at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11 attacks. The pages of the Bible in which they were printed had fused to a chunk of steel as the World Trade Center collapsed, to be found only months later.
Is it a message from God to us? Or just a mere coincidence? It’s a tough call in this age of increasing jihad, threatening us within our own borders. It does make you wonder, was some employee turning to his Bible for comfort knowing the end was near? We will likely never know in this life.
