It’s not often that someone famous comes out against the idea and practice of socialism, and it’s even rarer a scenario when they express their opinions unapologetically, as Vincent Scully did between plays as he discussed the country of origin of one of the players.
From Western Journalism:
Vincent “Vin” Scully has been an institution of sports broadcasting for decades. In addition to calling several major U.S. sporting event over the years, Scully has been the longtime play by play man for the Los Angeles Dodgers, now for 67 seasons.
With downtime in between plays, baseball announcers often have time to tell background stories on the players or from their own personal lives. The late Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Carey was famous for doing this, and Scully has done so repeatedly over the years.
However, what the 88-year-old announcing legend has not been known to do is express any kind of political opinion on the air.
Friday night, that changed.
In the top of the sixth inning of the Dodgers against the Milwaukee Brewers, Venezuelan born Hernan Perez came to the plate, prompting Scully to remark about the current state of Perez’s home country.
“Socialism failing to work as it always does, this time in Venezuela. You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden there’s no food to eat. And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello,” he said while waiting between pitches.
Let’s hope they don’t fire him over this factually correct, but apparently “controversial” opinion.
