The father of NFL player, James Winchester, was targeted and shot dead in Oklahoma City at Will Rogers World Airport Tuesday afternoon. The sniper was later found with a gunshot wound, dead.
Michael Winchester, who was an employee of Southwest Airlines, was shot and killed at 12:50 pm, Oklahoma City Police Capt. Paco Balderrama stated. His son is Kansas City Chiefs’ player, James Winchester, who is presently a long snapper on the NFL team and was a former punter for the University of Oklahoma.
The suspect’s body was discovered in the back of a red truck with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both were found on the second floor of the airport parking garage.
So far, investigators have only released that the suspect is identified as a white male. They had hinted that the damage done to the suspect played a role in the lack of information. Police say the assassination appears to be planned and they are currently searching for a motive. Lance West of KFOR, reported that the suspect may have been ‘a former disgruntled employee.’
The airport had gone into lock down as soon as the shooting was reported, with authorities investigating the scene for a large chunk of the rest of the day. Around 7:33 pm (ET), authorities gave the all-clear to reopen the airport slowly and resume business as usual.
West had tweeted earlier, citing unnamed sources, that investigators looking into the incident discovered a ‘sniper’s nest’ where they found the body of the suspect, though the Oklahoma police have yet to say whether that is true or not. First reports mentioned a second victim, but that has since proven false.
Southwest Airlines have since tweeted their support for the victim and his family during this life-altering event:
‘The Southwest Airlines Family is deeply saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his family and Southwest Co-workers at this time.’
