Accused rapist Darren Sharper came out in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday, where a judge sentenced the former NFL star to 20 years in prison after being found guilty for raping and drugging multiple women.
The 20 years came about from a plea deal worked out between the prosecution and Sharper’s legal team, who agreed to an offer that would have Sharper only serving half the time in exchange for a no contest plea to the charges placed against him.
Los Angeles County Superior Court also made sure that when Sharper came out of prison, he would have to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Two of Sharper’s victims also appeared in court when sentencing was dealt and they delivered grievous impact statements detailing their daily battle in the wake of their assaults.
The first victim, identified as Jane Doe 2, had the following to say:
‘What he did to me has left me feeling worthless and as if my life had no meaning, I lost every bit of self-confidence I have ever had and I am always in fear while alone.’
Jane Doe 4 also delineated the fear she felt, saying:
‘I lived in fear. I feared that he was out to get me and that he would do anything to keep me quiet. My life felt threatened. I would have nightmares of him strangling me, trying to kill me. Nightmares of him raping me and other women.’
Sharper, 41, sat in silence in his prison-issued orange jumpsuit while his victims spoke their emotional statements.
He also opted out of addressing those in attendance or his victims during his sentencing appearance in court.
The women described their assaults and what little recollection of what happened after being drugged before they were raped. The complete lack of knowing was especially hard on Jane Doe 2:
‘Because I was drugged by him and incapacitated, I had no ability to consent to sexual contact with him and I did not consent. I can only imagine myself lying there like a vegetable while he took advantage of my body without my permission.’
