Question: “How long will it be before the American public realizes that it was sold a bill of goods on President Obama, and what kind of event will precipitate that?” — RtWingNtCase
Answer: You never know exactly how things are going to play out, but Barack Obama has an incredible array of challenges in front of him. Part of that is because it looks like it’s going to be a tough four years for the country and part of it is because he ran as an “everything to everybody” candidate and that means a lot of people are going to be very disappointed in him when they find out he snowed them.
Beyond that, think about the challenges he’s going to have.
Does he move way off the left and try to put a lot of liberal agenda items in place over the next two years? It could work — but, if he governs as a liberal, he will alienate the American public and the Dems will take a beating in 2010.
On the other hand, if Obama tries to stay in the middle his base will get frustrated with him and it’s entirely possible the Dems may still lose enough seats in the Senate to be blocked in the Senate in 2010.
Either way he goes, there are going to be a lot of people who are going to be deeply disappointed in him.
Then there’s the war in Iraq. He has pledged to be out in 16 months. However, since we’re winning the war now, if it starts to go south, he will be personally blamed for it — and deservedly so. So, does he get out in 16 months come hell or high water to please his base or does he slow down, guarantee we win, and infuriate his base? Maybe he can thread the needle and do both — win and be out in 16 months. We’ll see.
You also have to consider the fact that the economy is going south. We’ve had one quarter of negative economic growth and we’ll likely have a 2nd one this quarter. So, he will start his presidency with an economy in recession. If he keeps his campaign promise and raises taxes, it may very well deepen our economic woes — but, if he doesn’t, his base will be unhappy. Whatever the case may be, fair or unfair, the President tends to get the credit and the blame for the economy, so if it’s bad — and probably will be bad for a year or two at least, Obama will be blamed for it.
Another problem is that we’ve had a bailout, we have more coming — and that’s on top of an enormous deficit. Yet, Obama’s entire agenda is centered around spending even more money and the Republicans will, if anybody in charge has a triple digit IQ, scream at the top of their lungs about the deficit non-stop. Does Obama break his promises or does he live up to the “tax and spend Democrat” label?
We also can’t forget about the whole international scene. Obama will be viewed, correctly I think, as a weakling. He’s going to be tested just like Joe Biden said. Will he pass? Maybe, maybe not.
Many people also seem to be under the impression that Obama is taking us into a post-racial world. So, what happens when people say, quite correctly, that Obama proves this isn’t a racist country and that we don’t need Affirmative Action while his supporters simultaneously accuse everyone who disagrees with him about anything of being a racist? What happens when the first black President screws up, his approval rating drops, and his supporters try to blame it on racism? What happens when “that’s racist” is so over-used that people just roll their eyes when they hear it — and it’s all Obama’s fault?
Then there’s the fact that so many of Obama supporters have this almost messiah-like view of him. Obama is going to unite the country, make the world love us, and fix all of our problems — of course, none of those things are going to happen.
Now, combine that with the fact that he has the sort of arrogance about his abilities that only someone who has never really accomplished very much can have. Don’t get me wrong: Barack Obama has done a lot in his life — but, he will be one of the least capable, least qualified people ever to become President of the United States.
Last but not least, this was a “lesser of two evils” election and even though Obama and the Democrats won, they’re still generally considered an “evil” by many of the people that voted for them. In other words, Obama and the Dems aren’t going to be cut a lot of slack by the American people.
So, when do the American people realize they were sold a bill of goods? It’s hard to say exactly, but I suspect the honeymoon is going to be very short indeed…
