Recent news has spread like wildfire that Ben Carson seems to be softening his stance on the 2nd Amendment. But that is simply not true. He is and always has been pro 2nd Amendment. What he is actually calling for is a civil discussion that includes the points made by both sides as well as the important reasoning laid out by our founders. He is calling for less emotion and name calling and more honest debate. But he is not calling for the repeal of 2A.
From the Daily Mail:
Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson seems to have eased up…and called for both sides of the debate to be heard.
Two weeks after the Orlando gay club shooting, Carson appeared in an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitichell on Thursday and said: ‘What is the reason for the Second Amendment? And, is there a reason that we need to change those things right now?’
Carson’s stance has softened since his run for president, when he supported the sanctity of the Second Amendment and said Hitler could have been stopped if more people were armed.
He said: ‘Let’s put on the table — what is the reason for the Second Amendment? And, is there a reason that we need to change those things right now?’
Carson, who endorsed Donald Trump after he dropped out of the race in March, also called for an open discussion.
‘I think the people who are protesting certainly feel that they are absolutely, 100 percent right.
‘But of course the people on the other side feel that they’re 100 percent right too. That’s why we need to get back to a point of having civil discussion.’
‘Let’s put the data on the table and let’s talk about it like intelligent people rather than getting in our respective corners and hurling insults,’ he suggested. ‘We’ll never solve anything that way.’
Carson has always been about the civil discussion. He has never been a fan of attack mode or rudeness. And anyone who has been following him knows this. As Americans, we can always have an honest debate if all sides choose it. It’s part of our national identity. Our Second Amendment is critical to who we are and the freedoms we enjoy. And it certainly can’t hurt to engage in discourse that illuminates the reasoning of the wise men who wrote it, while also addressing the concerns of both sides.
