Right Wing Radio Week in Review: May 4 – 8

For weeks, Rush Limbaugh has been in the news[1]. Ever since his big CPAC speech, the media and the Democrat party have targeted Limbaugh as “the de facto leader of the GOP” (like that’s a bad thing, but anyhow…)

Incredibly, Rush Limbaugh was pushed off the front pages by his fellow radio host Michael Savage[2].

I don’t write much about Michael Savage here at Right Wing Radio Week in Review, because he just isn’t on my radar any more. There are only so many hours in the day, and so many radio shows I prefer to listen to.

But this week, in a truly bizarre development, the British Home Office released a list of individuals supposedly so evil and dangerous that they must never be allowed to enter the U.K. People like actual Muslim terrorists. And one of the individuals on the Home Office list is Michael Savage.[3]

I’m baffled, and so is almost everyone[4], even people who aren’t fans of the, er, outspoken talk show host. Since when do the British even know who Michael Savage is? Do they get his show over there? If they’ve listened to his show on the internet, and that’s primarily how he reaches English listeners, how will banning him from setting foot on British soil make any difference?

And, as Savage notes in his inimitable way[5], he wasn’t even planning to go there anyhow!

The funny guys at The People’s Cube spoke for many of us media nobodies toiling in the trenches: “I Want To Be Banned From England Like Michael Savage”[6]

Also he’s planning to sue. This should be good.

I may have to start listening to Michael Savage again…

Rush didn’t get off entirely scott free last week. The media indulged in their usual fake outrage when Limbaugh advised Colin Powell to become a Democrat[7] and get it over with, and when Rush criticized Jeb Bush’s “Listening Tour” and suggested a “teaching tour”[8] of the country starring Sarah Palin instead, to reeducate Americans on the principles of conservatism.

Mark Steyn [9]sat in for Rush again last Thursday, leading listeners to ask, yet again, why he doesn’t just have his own show.

Steyn – who’s lived in Canada, the U.S. and Britain — also stopped by Hugh Hewitt‘s [10]to tell some hair raising tales about socialized medicine around the world, one of which involved his leg and a very sharp saw…

A professor compared Glenn Beck[11] with that late, unlamented leftist boogeyman Father Coughlin, but said Beck was even worse!

G. Gordon Liddy[12] spoke to talk radio pioneer turned author Brian Jennings, whose new book is flying up the Amazon.com rankings. It’s called Censorship: The Threat to Silence Talk Radio[13]

I didn’t even know he was drunk: Dennis Miller[14] spoke to Tucker Carlson, who mentioned that he’s given up drinking. I can’t really imagine Tucker Carlson drunk out of his mind, but there you go. Carlson also said he is starting up a brand new website devoted to covering the news, so watch for that.

He’s been on the air just over two years now, and I’ve been a faithful listener literally since Day One, but last week Dennis Miller took one of the top five best calls ever, bar none. One of Miller’s favorite songs is Glenn Campbell’s “Wicheta Lineman,” so it gets played a lot as bumper music. A woman called in and told the story of the time she and a friend met Glenn Campbell at a party. She summoned up the nerve to ask Campbell to sing “Wicheta Lineman” and much to her surprise, he obliged – then told her and her friend that they “had asses like champion racehorses”! Dennis Miller has the best callers, hands down.

Hugh Hewitt’s regular Friday look at the movies features The Top Ten Prequel Movies[15], in honor of the new Star Trek flick.

Finally, Rich Little imitated Mark Levin[16] (extremely well!) on Sean Hannity[17]‘s show (“GET OFF MY PHONE, YOU CREEP!!”).

What did I miss? Let me know in the comments.

(Kathy Shaidle blogs at FiveFeetOfFury[18]. Her latest book is The Tyranny of Nice:[19] How Canada crushes freedom in the name of human rights — and why it matters to Americans, which features an introduction by Mark Steyn[20].)
