It is happening[2]. The election is blessedly finally coming to a close. And the news can’t seem to get enough of it. Every topic is somehow being turned into an election discussion. Susan Sarandon, academy award winner, was recently interviewed on BBC. And even though the subject matter had nothing to do with the election, it was immediately brought into the conversation.

The interviewer made the assumption that just because Susan Sarandon was a female, she should be voting for Hillary Clinton. Her response was nothing short of epic. And I can’t help but feel a little pride for my gender. You can ABSOLUTELY be pro-woman and not pro-Hillary Clinton. In fact, my appreciation for womanhood makes me dislike Hillary Clinton even more.

In the interview, Davis begins by bringing up the election saying:

Davis: A lot of women think it’s the most natural thing in the world that you might have a woman President. Does that not sway you to say “Hillary Clinton, first woman President, that would be a big moment for the US – in a good way”?

Susan Sarandon doesn’t waste a moment in her perfect response:

Sarandon: You know, I want the right woman. There are great woman that I admire that have headed nations… But I don’t vote with my vagina. You know, this is bigger than that.

So to women everywhere who feel the need to support Hillary Clinton based on their gender alone, you are worth more than that. Your gender isn’t in bondage to a party or a vote or an individual. Isn’t feminism supposed to be about independence and emancipation from emotional and psychological bondage? It means we are not told how to vote or how to think.

Voting for someone just because we are expected to vote for them based on our gender is an insult to femininity.
