Terrorist Stopped At The Canadian Border

An unrepentant terrorist was turned back at the Canadian border – so where’s the story?[1]

An American education professor, one of the founders of a radical 1960s group known as the Weather Underground, which was responsible for a number of bombings in the United States in the early 1970s, was turned back at the Canadian border last night.

Dr. William Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a leader in educational reform, was scheduled to speak at the Centre for Urban Schooling at University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. But that appearance has now been temporarily cancelled.

“I don’t know why I was turned back,” Ayers said in an interview this morning from Chicago. “I got off the plane like everyone else and I was asked to come over to the other side. The border guards reviewed some stuff and said I wasn’t going to be allowed into Canada. To me it seems quite bureaucratic and not at all interesting … If it were me I would have let me in. I couldn’t possibly be a threat to Canada.”

Well no one knows that for sure, Mr. Ayers. I mean it was you who said you wish you’d done more when you were a terrorist. Who knows what’s banging around your head these days? You may be unhappy with the way Canadians say “about” and want to demonstrate, in an explosive way, that such pronunciations are no longer acceptable. You are an education professor who has been know to bomb things, after all.

Jeffrey Kugler, executive director of the Centre for Urban Schooling, was waiting on Ayers at the airport and, of course, never was able to see the old bomber:

“The entire four or five hours he was not allowed to have representation at all. To me this is an issue of academic freedom. He could not be a threat to anyone ever. Anyone who knows anything about this man – he’s a distinguished scholar at the University of Illinois and he has been involved in education reform over the past 15 years. To imagine in any way he was a threat to Canada is really absurd.”

Academic freedom? I wonder, would Canada welcome Osama bin Laden if he were a professor of Islamic Studies?

Hey Jeff, hate to break it to you, but your bud is an unrepentant terrorist. And I know this will most likely come as a shock to many in academia, but actions have consequences. I mean, who knew he’d be a threat to people of the US before he began his bombing career? Who knows if he’s done.

Once a terrorist, always a terrorist, Jeff – at least until the terrorist renounces his previous actions. That’s something Billy boy has never done. Until that happens, we really don’t know what he’s likely to do, do we? And he can’t ever call himself a former terrorist until he does.

Even then we won’t know for sure, will we? I mean, this guy actually blew things up, Jeff. As I’m sure you’ve seen on news reports over the recent years, that’s not a real popular thing among civilized nations, especially now.

And while it may come as a surprise to you, activities in which Mr. Ayers has engaged are exactly the type which land a person on a terrorist watch-list. In this era of mad bombers it’s always better to be safe than sorry, eh?

I’m sorry, I can’t help but enjoy the irony of this particular situation. It just smacks of cosmic justice.
