After heartbreaking abuse and a near-death experience, Patrick, a Pit Bull mix, is showing that you can’t keep a good dog down[1].

Patrick’s owners had starved him for months before one day, three years ago, they did the unthinkable. Patrick was put into a trash bag, then dumped into a New Jersey apartment building’s garbage chute that dropped him 19 stories down.

Luckily, just before the garbage was compacted, maintenance workers noticed the bag was moving very slightly. They soon discovered the emaciated, dying dog. Authorities were contacted, and Patrick was immediately taken to the Associated Humane Societies’ Newark Animal Shelter. Things weren’t looking good for the poor dog.

The veterinarians couldn’t believe the dog was even alive. Given how strongly he was clinging to life, they did everything they could to ensure he made it through the night. When the dog was still alive the next morning on March 17th, it was decided that his name should be Patrick. It was more than luck that saved this dog’s life.

Patrick’s story began to circulate online, and people were shocked and disgusted by the cruelty this poor animal faced. Support came pouring in, and more than $30,000 in donations was raised in just three days.

With the overwhelming love and support coming from the community, Patrick’s medical expenses were covered, and his recovery was going very well.

Patrick’s previous owner was discovered and taken to court for animal cruelty. The trial was long and drawn out, but eventually, Patrick’s former owner pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree animal cruelty. The woman received 18 months probation and paid $2,000 in restitution to the ASPCA.

In the meantime, Patrick was making a fantastic recovery. He was strong and determined, and regardless of the horrors he had faced in the past, he was becoming a happy, healthy dog.

Recently, Patrick was inducted into the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Hall of Fame.
