…And there are always people sitting around going, “Oh, we have too many religious people in the Republican Party. ” You know what? The Democrat Party believes we have too many religious people in the Republican Party, too, and they’re working really hard to peel off a bunch of them. — Maggie Gallagher
The mainstream perception that conservatives are close-minded and dogmatic while liberals are open-minded and free-thinking has it almost exactly backward. Liberal dogma is settled: The government should do good, where it can, whenever it can. That is President Obama’s idea of pragmatism and bipartisanship: He’s open to all ideas, from either side of the aisle, about how best to expand government and get the state more involved in our lives. Meanwhile, conservatism’s dogma remains forever in flux. We constantly debate the trade-offs between freedom and virtue, the conflicts between liberty and order. — Jonah Goldberg
Throw the social conservatives the pro-life, pro-family people overboard and the Republican party will be as irrelevant as the Whigs,” he said in reference to the American political party that largely disbanded in the mid 1800s.
“They’ll basically be a party of gray-haired old men sitting around the country club puffing cigars, sipping brandy and wondering whatever happened to the country. That will be the end of the party,” he said in the interview published Thursday. — Mike Huckabee
Everything can be taken away from you. The government can take your money, your cars, your house. But the government can’t take your education from you. Let athletics be the second most important thing on your list when you’re in college. If I could do it, you can do it. And I was a bonehead. — Bo Jackson
Honestly, I think that everybody involved would be happier if we just established once and for all that the Watergate scandal was a disaster for the newspaper industry; it encouraged an entire generation of reporters to go out there and try to change American society, instead of simply documenting it. — Moe Lane
The government can’t afford to take over a kid’s lemonade stand on Mainstreet USA. They’re out of money! — Rush Limbaugh
Only a liberal could confuse actual torture with college hazing. I suspect there are members of fraternities who could share more harrowing tales than the Islamics with their Korans, their three squares and their personal prayer mats at Gitmo. — Burt Prelutsky
Democrats have nothing to fear from today’s Republican Party leaders. That’s why Democrats have taken to targeting Rush Limbaugh and others who aren’t in formal leadership positions in the GOP but who forcefully articulate a conservative vision. — Richard Viguerie
The big mistake of Republican leadership is thinking that going through the motions of listening to their “base” is the same thing as actually listening to the base. They keep trying to drag us to where they think we should be instead of joining us where we are. — Yael
